June's birthstone

Those born in June are doubly blessed as they have both the Pearl and the Moonstone as their birthstones.

The Pearl traditionally symbolises a pure heart and mind, innocence and faith and is believed to promote sincerity, truth and loyalty. The Moonstone is thought to enhance femininity and intuition.

Unlike all the other birthstones which are mineral, Pearls are organic. They form inside a mollusc where an irritant is encased in layer after layer of nacre. Light reflecting from the nacre produces the lustre for which Pearls are prized.

Pearls were once thought to be the tears of the Gods. They measure 3 on the Mohs' scale and need to be treated with respect. Wearing them regularly allows the oils on your skin to help preserve their lustre.

Known as the stone of the Moon Goddess, Moonstone measures 6 on the Mohs' scale.

Moonstone was so named because the blue or white sheen seen almost floating within the stone was thought to look like the shine of the moon.

Moonstone can be found in a number of colours including white, peach, cream, blue, grey and rainbow.

If you were born under the Zodiac sign of Gemini (22 May - 22 June), the stone historically associated with your sign is the Agate.

If you were born under the Zodiac sign of Cancer (23 June - 23 July), the stone historically associated with your sign is the Emerald.

The custom of wearing birthstone jewellery gained momentum in 18th Century Poland and is thought to stem from an interest in the significance of the original twelve stones in the breastplate of the Jewish high priest, as highlighted by St Jerome in the 5th Century.
