March's birthstone

Aquamarine is the birthstone of those born in March.

It is said to promote safe travel across water and release anxiety and fear.

Meaning sea water, Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family and measures 7.5 on the Mohs' scale.

Said to be a favourite of Queen Victoria in its deepest shades, almost all Aquamarine on the market today has been heat treated to enhance its colour.

The paler shades of Aquamarine are sometimes confused with the palest blue Topaz shade; Sky Blue Topaz.

If you were born under the Zodiac sign of Pisces (20 February - 20 March), the stone historically associated with your sign is the Amethyst.

If you were born under the Zodiac sign of Aries (21 March - 20 April), the stone historically associated with your sign is the Bloodstone.

The custom of wearing birthstone jewellery gained momentum in 18th Century Poland and is thought to stem from an interest in the significance of the original twelve stones in the breastplate of the Jewish high priest, as highlighted by St Jerome in the 5th Century.
