September's birthstone

The truly stunning Sapphire is the birthstone for those lucky enough to be born in September.

It is said to aid communication, insight, intuition, spiritual prayer/devotion and peacefulness.

Second only to Diamond on the Mohs' scale with a hardness measurement of 9, Sapphire is the "twin" of the Ruby. Both corundum, the blue Sapphire's colour comes from iron and titanium impurities.

Sapphires are found in many colours including green, yellow, pink, orange, purple and silvery grey.

Blue Sapphires were believed to symbolise the tranquillity of the heavens and bestow peace and amiability upon the wearer.

Cat's-eye Sapphires are cabochon stones, cut so that their internal features reflect a line of light like a cat's-eye.

If you were born under the Zodiac sign of Virgo (24 August - 22 September), the stone historically associated with your sign is the Carnelian.

If you were born under the Zodiac sign of Libra (23 September - 23 October), the stone historically associated with your sign is the Chrysolite.

The custom of wearing birthstone jewellery gained momentum in 18th Century Poland and is thought to stem from an interest in the significance of the original twelve stones in the breastplate of the Jewish high priest, as highlighted by St Jerome in the 5th Century.
